An autumnal moment

"Qiujiang yuyin" 秋江漁隱 (Fishing Recluse on the Autumn River), hanging scroll by Ma Yuan 馬遠 (ca. 1160-1225)

Inscription by the Qianlong Emperor 乾隆 (1711-1799, ruling 1735-1796)

月落江天罷釣魚,

倚榔坐睡夢華胥。

蘆叢何必扁舟繫,

波漾風吹任所如。

辛卯秋御題

As the moon sinks from the sky above the river, [he] fishes no more,

[But] sits asleep, leaning on the beating pole,[1] dreaming about Huaxu. [2]

Why bother to attach the small boat to the reeds?

Wherever waves and winds take it, there it’ll be.

Inscribed by the [Qianlong] Emperor in the autumn of the xinmao year [=1711]

[1] Lang 榔 is the beating pole used to hit against the side of the boat to startle the fish and drive them into the net.

[2] Huaxu 華胥 is a legendary ancient kingdom and a symbol of utopia (and by extension “dreamland”).
