許有壬《蘆菔》“Radishes” by Xu Youren (1287-1364)

性質宜沙地,

栽培屬夏畦。

熟登甘似芋,

生薦脆如梨。

老病消凝滯,

奇功直品題。

故園長尺許,

青葉更堪齏。

 

By nature, [it] prefers sandy soil,

When planted, [it] goes into the summer plot.

When presented cooked, [it’s] sweet like taro;

When served raw, [it’s] as crunchy as a pear.

[My] old problem of stagnation [1] gets resolved:

[Its] extraordinary contribution must be praised.

Growing over a foot long in the old garden,

[Its] green leaves are also material for pickles.
